Peugeot 208 in the center, but it's the Audi A1 wins the test. But only if you choose the right version ... |
New 208 is the car that will replace the Peugeot in Europe's small car faith. That's at least what the French manufacturer intended. But in our test reached 208-ball is not all the way. A little high quality German became too difficult ...
It began with a 205-ball, which debuted almost 30 years ago (1983). Then came the Peugeot 206 and the next step was 207 model. All three were multi-million sellers and for long periods dominated the small car The charts, both in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe.
Audi A1 Sportback |
Peugeot's ambition is, of course, that new 208-ball to live up to predecessors successes, and most preferably exceed them. But it is no easy task. Competition in size class is tougher than ever. More and more manufacturers, also known as the premium manufacturer, would be fighting for the small car customers and the range of models is now huge.
It requires, in other words something special for new Peugeot 208 if it is a chance to reach as high chart positions as their predecessors.
One measure that the manufacturer hopes will affect 208: ans attractiveness positive is the comprehensive slimming the model went through. The new car is shorter and lighter than the 207 model. The length has been cut by seven centimeters and weight by about 100 pounds. It will do 208: an easier to manage, more economical on fuel and - according to the manufacturer - more attractive to female buyers, many of which were critical of the 207: ans size.
Peugeot 208 |
Although the outward forms have been polished and the new Peugeot is also intended to provide a higher quality feel than its predecessor. Technology content has also been improved, although there are some shortcomings in this respect. But we will return to later in the test.
When it comes to ride comfort, however, there is not much to complain about. New 208-ball rolls how comfortable anywhere on most surfaces. Peugeot has succeeded in both suspension and noise insulation on one of bilstorleken extremely well.
Neither Audi A1 Sportback or Suzuki Swift has much to set against the French car in that area. Both are more rigid, and stötigare däcksbullrigare than Peugeot. In the civil war between Audi and Suzuki pick A1 most points and it becomes Swift ends up on comfort Ronden last place.
But the new Peugeot 208 is not just test's most comfortable car to ride in. It can be driven as well, which it proves to testslingas meanest parties. There are abuzz with sharp curves, buckled asphalt and other challenges that put the chassis of the toughest tests.
Suzuki Swift |
But it does not cause problems for Peugeot, dancing around the curves with full control even when it is pressed against the limits of what it can withstand. Control reactions are rapping and precise, and the car can withstand high cornering speeds without losing your grip on the asphalt.
Also work fine suspension to the substrate, and not even on really bad roads revealed some alarming tendencies wheels drop, bounce, or other nonsense. The French chassis engineers have done a big job, that is for sure. One complaint is the slightly artificial feeling of control that gives a small minus in körkänsloprotokollet.
But despite the many fine features, 208-ball beaten by the test's best small driving machine; A1 Sportback. Audin rolls in all positions klippstadigt the wheels, while being entertaining quick and precise in control reactions.
One explanation for the sharp kurvegenskaperna is the electronic diffbromsen, XDS, working together with ABS-/antisladdsystemet. It senses the load on the inner front wheel is reduced too much.
If this happens automatically brakes the inside wheel, short, validated, and the drive torque is headed instead of to the outside wheel that can send more power down the road.
Audi A1 Sportback interior |
The result is that a large part of understeer tendencies conjured away. It makes the car feel comfortable easily controlled and smooth, even when the road curves mean. The system also helps the Audi through älgtestets three brutal turns in a way that none of its competitors can match.
The car that harbors most behind in the more advanced körövningarna the Suzuki Swift and it depends primarily on the chassis not quite measure up.
Suzukins suspension / damping does not provide the same excellent adherence to the substrate as Audi and Peugeot. This means that the Japanese car has clear tendency to bounce on poor surfaces with a radically weakened grip as a result.
Neither of dodge sample Suzukin works flawlessly. At speeds where the other two test cars are relatively unconcerned slips between the cones, the driver struggling with a surprisingly bushy skidding Swift.
A smoother suspension and better calibrated traction control system called! That would do the trick for Suzukins driving under stressful conditions.
Peugeot 208 interior |
In normal rampage notice, however, none of Swift's hidden road imperfections. As experienced car instead as both friendly, reliable and easy to handle. In city traffic, the even test winner, at least in terms of visibility. A-pillars are not nearly as bulky as the Audi and Peugeot and also rear visibility is best in the Japanese car.
208-ball suffers from poor visibility, even in a different way. The bright dashboard allows for almost any light glare and reflection on the windshield. In practice, it is felt that if the box is permanently coated with a thin term retardant coating. Mostly annoying!
Although as a whole wreaked Peugeot driver annoyance, at least in parts of the test team. The reason is the odd placement of the instrument cluster, which sits above a little chubby knob.
Peugeot's argument for the different solution is that the instruments end up more in the driver's eye-catching and thus are easier to read.
Though it was not for many of the team's test drivers. They had to have the wheel uncomfortably low, more or less in the knee, but still could not see more than parts of meter boards.
Suzuki Swift interior |
We also send a tip to all bidders on new 208: check carefully that the instrumentation works for you personally, or you risk over time become greatly frustrated!
This type of problem is not with Audi, behind the wheel of the A1-ball is the German regime applicable. Quality esteem and attention to detail is also in a class by itself, and the same high standard as the rest of the brand's models. This is about the premium (excuse floskeln) in the small format.
Suzuki counters with the test's most spacious cockpit and behind the wheel of the car feels much larger than it is. Most also works smoothly and flawlessly. But the impression of quality and interior design is not up to the test competitors' level, but is more reminiscent of the Asian School Form 1A.
The Swift also mixed old and new in a rather funny way. It feels a bit strange having to entangle your fingers behind the wheel to access the trip computer functions, while both can unlock and start the car without having to guess the key (key-free system is standard on the Exclusive version).
The performance measurements revealed no significant differences between the test cars. But in traffic it is undoubtedly A1: ans small turbo spinning at 1.2 l/86 hp is the favorite.
The test has the best torque and also supplies power across a wide rpm range. This allows Audi during all normal everyday driving feel awake and more alert than konkurreterna. Peugeot and Suzuki is clearly sävligare in throttle response at low and intermediate speed and require more frequent changing for it to be sprutt on rigs.
However, A1-ball not stingiest fuel. At that point, it is Suzuki who take home test victory. But the comparison is a bit unfair, even though all three cars for fuel measurements were driven in convoy under identical conditions. Swift benefited from it was well run and had rolled several hundred mil longer than A1 and 208, which basically came directly from the band when the test was done.
Peugeot stand out negatively by being the only car in the trio who fail the Swedish environmental classification, the missing 9 g / km to 120-limit. But efficient bensinare is going on in the near future.
It's about two new three-cylinder engines: one of 1.0 l/68 hp and a 1.2 l/82 hp. Carbon dioxide emissions of 99 and 104 g / km.
In terms of facilities, both for people luggage, it's the Peugeot 208 is the test winner. Although the new car is shrunk by nearly an inch compared to the 207 model is roomier inside. But there is nothing magic about behind that. The explanation is that the cutting of the external measurements made on the bodywork overhangs. 208: ans wheelbase, which is crucial for interior spaces, however, is identical to its predecessor.
By occupy the interior better, Peugeot has succeeded in creating a five centimeters more leg a scope in the back and a few liters of cargo volume in the trunk.
But 208-ball shatters not only their representatives, it strikes also test competitors quite a bit on your fingers (see space tables on page 39!).
In the Euro NCAP crash tests, all three cars highest star rating. But none of them offer the latest generation of active safety.
When even mini-cars like Volkswagen Up has auto brake as standard, it is surprising that especially the Peugeot, which is newest in the party, not the kind of security features even on the option list. And sure, we could have ask for a little more even by Audi.
If you look solely to the purchase cost, it is no doubt about which car is economics winner in this test. Then it Swift apply.
But price is not the whole truth about car ownership and Audi surprises with an unexpectedly low mileage. Since A1-ball is also the most the most competent car overall, it will be the one who wins the game, just ahead of Peugeot and with Swiftin a creditable third place.
But the result is only valid for one important condition: that man A1 buyers are satisfied with it completely necessary Proline package. Otherwise runaway price of going to too high levels, Audi's optional prices are not to be trifled with.
One should not forget that both Peugeot and Suzuki - but not Audi - available in cheaper versions. In such a comparison would likely result would have been a completely different ...
First Audi A1 Sportback - test winner
Audi A1 sportback is neither the world's most spacious and smartest built small car. But it has many other good qualities that makes it break the opponents in this test. Quality Impressions, driveability, engine character and attention to detail is at its peak. Unfortunately, this also applies to the price, which is the highest in the test. But if you look at the total cost of ownership will matter in a somewhat different light. This places the Audi on a much more decent level and noted even for a lower mileage than the toughest test competitor Peugeot 208th But in order to keep the calculations it is important not to go away in the Audi's options list, then the price so easily soar to dramatic levels.
2nd Peugeot 208
French challenger Peugeot 208 offers sensible spaces, comfortable ride and competent handling. But the driver can cause irritation, corrosion protection is scant and the mileage up to the test. It will be just a second location for the new Peugeot.
3rd Suzuki Swift
We have tested the Suzuki Swift before, when the other opposition and with better results. In the match against A1 and 208 hands Swift not really even sensible price, low consumption and sympathetic tone. Both chassis and rust has flaws and the brakes are the worst in the test.
